Despite the stock market crash of 1929, the 1930's represented a remarkable decade in the history of furniture design. With overproduction of goods saturating the market, manufacturers looked to a new generation of designers who drew on the influences of associated fields such as illustration, graphic design, window-display specialists and theatrical designers. Aware of the interest in modern styles and motifs known as Art Deco, introduced to the masses by the Paris Exposition of 1925 [The Exposition Internationale des Arts Decoratifs et Industriels Modernes], designers and manufacturers created a bold new look that represented popular taste and fashion.
Cresent's Moderne collection of solid mahogany bedroom, dining room, entertainment, and occasional furniture harks back to the spirit of the Thirties and the dynamism of speed and the aesthetic of the machine, which found its most expressive form in the sleek, streamlined airplanes, trains, and motor cars of the period.
Clean simple lines, geometric forms, with flat surfaces and straight lines combined with graceful curves are the dominant design elements. Inverted cavetto moldings sit atop cases and flow downward on subtly tapered feet, while drawers are inset and framed with a delicate cocked bead. The nickel hardware is functional, harmonizing with the design. While not just simply functional, each piece indicates utility, attractive proportion and subtle dignity to achieve a unity of design.
